The sandstone that forms these cliffs was laid down on the floor of a Cretaceous sea roughly 100 million years ago, then lifted, split and carved by the Elbe into a labyrinth of freestanding towers. Geologists count more than a thousand climbable pinnacles across the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Rangers manage the recovery as an open-air experiment in non-intervention.
