Saxon Switzerland contains no mountains in the geological sense. Its towers, tables and ravines are the remains of a Cretaceous seabed — sand deposited roughly 90 million years ago, later cut apart by the Elbe and its tributaries. Nothing here was raised; everything was removed.

What has been built here is sparse and purposeful.
