The region was named by homesick outsiders. In the 1760s the Swiss painter Adrian Zingg and his colleague Anton Graff joined the Dresden academy, looked upstream along the Elbe, and found the sandstone country there comparable to the Jura at home. Saxon Switzerland was the phrase that stuck.

The built structures are modest and deliberate.
